Health Week: TemporalScanner

Thursday, November 20, 2008 Posted by Felicia

Win your very own Temporal Artery Thermometer! I am in absolute love with the TemporalScanner by Exergen! I wish I had been the owner of this about 19 months ago when Graham was born! Not only is this extremely fast and non-invasive, it also gives an extraordinarily accurate reading!

How it works: You simply place the scanner in the center of the forehead. Press the scan button and swipe it gently across the forehead towards the temple! It is that easy and that quick (check out the SHORT video below!). Soft LED lights and soft beeps let you know if you have a correct scan. You have your reading in about 2-3 seconds! It is so gentle that you can take a temperature while your child is sleeping!

How many times have you put your child to bed with a high fever and expected to get up and check the fever in a couple of hours? What do you do? You have to wake up your child, possibly undress them, maybe even take off a diaper, then try to get them back to sleep! Not anymore! I am sold, if not for any other reason! But there are so many more reasons...

Why is it so Great?

*Takes 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate
*Arterial Heat Balance calculates the correct temperature by taking into consideration the ambient temperature!
*A Harvard Medical Study found the TemporalScanner even more accurate than the ear thermometer!
*The price is comparable to other high-tech thermometers ($49.99 at most retailers)

One reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent. This creates inconsistent readings and frequently misses fevers.

This thing is freaking AWESOME. I don't need one - I have one. I could give it to someone. :) I have a bloggy friend in mind if my entries win.

Tip thats IMPORTANT (and on the site) - Dont immediately scan again. The movement can cool the forehead and give a false reading. Trust this thing! Scan correctly and once and use that temp. Otherwise wait a few minutes to rescan.

Sweating of the forehead skews the reading, so they give you the following instructions when sweat is present:

When a fever resolves, your body may bring its temperature down by sweating.
The TemporalScanner detects this reduction in temperature
immediately - long before a rectal thermometer can do so.
However, sweating also causes extra cooling of the skin. As a
result the reading given by the TemporalScanner may be low.
You should therefore either wait until the sweating has stopped
(wiping the forehead is not recommended, since the sweating
immediately begins again), or use the following method, which
has been clinically proven to provide accurate results.
    1. Scan the temperature as normal, keeping the button depressed
    2. Gently nestle the TemporalScanner on neck directly behind ear lobe
    3. Release the button and read the temperature

    I learned this fact:
Slide the thermometer in a reasonably straight line across the forehead, midway between the eyebrows and the upper hairline, and not down the side of the face. Midway on the forehead area, the temporal artery is less than 2 millimeters below the skin surface, but down the side of the face, it is much deeper and less accurately measured.
Thank you so very much this would be so awesome!

Just like with the hand held breathalyzers I use to test my children on weekends, it's necessary to wait between readings in order to ensure an accurate reading.

It takes the arterial temperature, which is the temperature of the heart making it the most accurate way to test for a fever.

WOW! I'm so impressed that this "scanner" is so accurate and that it is able to read temperatures in 2-3 seconds. This is a mom's dream come true - so much easier than the "under the arm or tongue" method.

I went on the site and read that you have to be careful to scan the exposed skin. It's not as accurate if there are "things" in the way (hair, hat, headband, etc.).

I like that it can be used on any age and that you don't have to try to find probe covers in the middle of the night -- because of course they are never where you think they are when you're searching for them at midnight!
