Allergy Season Tips for your Home from Filtrete

Monday, May 11, 2009 Posted by Felicia

I'm not sure what happened when I turned 20, but that seemed to be the magical number when seasonal allergies started to effect me. It is usually right about this time of year when my nose decides to stop working and my eyes are red and running. I have also noticed that this happens even indoors when we start moving things around or really cleaning.

Did You Know....

  • According to the Journal of Indoor Air, a lack of concentration in school aged children can be caused by the lack of quality in the indoor air. Makes sense to me! How can you do school work when you are sneezing your head off and you are on the verge of a headache 24/7!
  • According to the American Lung Association, Asthma leads to about 10 million lost school days for children. That is a lot of school!
Here are a few tips from Dr. Neil Schachter, former president of the American Lung Association in New York, to keep your indoor allergies at a minimum:

  • Avoid cleaning products that contain ammonia or chlorine
  • Limit your pet to only certain areas of your house. Try to keep them out of your bedroom (easier said than done when you have the sneakiest cats on the block).
  • Purchasing a high performance air filter such as the 3M Filtrete (We use the Filtrete Allergen Reduction filter because it seems to be more moderately priced and still works well).
  • Change your filter every 3 months
Right now you can listen to a podcast by Dr. Schachter on even more tips for your home as well as take a Fact or Fiction Quiz to test your knowledge of indoor air quality. Those who take the quiz are entered for a chance to win a Home Inspection with Steve Ramos, a featured home inspector on HGTV's House Detective!

Another great idea is to sign up to be a part of the Clean Air Club. It is FREE and here is what you receive:

  • A Home owner's Guide to Better Indoor Air Quality
  • Indoor Air Quality Journal
  • "My Size" Filter Wallet Reminder Card
  • Seasonal eNewsletters
  • Promotions and Rebates
  • The fist 50 People to sign up each week receive a Bamboo Plant (a natural air purifier)
What do you do to help reduce allergies at your house? Thanks to Mom Central for letting me know about the new Clean Air Club sign up! I am already a loyal Filtrete user because of the quality and the price and this is an added bonus!
