Dr. Hippo Books: Helping Kids Understand Illness
You may remember last month my review on Dr. Hippo's latest book, The Moose with Loose Poops. The book is all about gastroenteritis and its effects on Miles the moose. I was more than impressed with the book and was excited to have the opportunity to review the rest of the series! As I mention in my last review, I used to work as an elementary school counselor and saw a need for these books daily! It is nice to have common illnesses put on a child's level to help normalize and bring comfort to the child.Dr. Hippo's books are written by Dr. Charlotte Cowan who is a pediatrician with three children of her own. Every Dr. Hippo book comes with A Guide For Parents slipped into the back that details all the facts and tips about the particular illness covered in the book that parents will want to know!
What I love about each of these books is the fact that Dr. Cowan has taken the time to illustrate what children feel all the time about illnesses. She points out the nervousness Eddie feels in The Little Elephant with the Big Earache when he is walking up to the doctor's office. So many children are nervous about their experience at the doctor and being fully aware of what is about to happen can help. Dr. Hippo books also help explain to children about proper ways to manage illnesses. Katie is encouraged to sneeze into her sleeve in Katie Caught a Cold. Sometimes it may stick with children more when they see trusted, colorful characters demonstra
ting the ins and outs of illnesses. Common side effects and symptoms are also pointed out. Peeper is surprised to find spots all over him after a fever in Peeper Has a Fever. It is also common for children to be disappointed in the fact that they will not be able to participate in certain activites until they are feeling better. In Sadie's Sore Throat, all little Sadie the giraffe wants to do is to attend the fair like planned. I love how Dr. Cowan creates an open dialogue between parent and child to try and sort out these feelings. All five books in the series are extremely well written. I love the attention to detail on the illustrations as well. There is just enough information to keep your child interested and informed without going over board. Dr. Hippo's books really should be in every parents library. What wonderful resources to refer to when your child inevitably has one of these illnesses.
Dr. Hippo Books retail for about $17.95 and are on sale at Amazon right now for about $14! You can also find Dr. Hippo Books at your local bookstore.

I'd pick, The Moose with Loose Poops. A few months ago, we had the stomach flu in our house. Not much fun when you are a family of 8.
2 of the children had it 2 or 3 times, thankfully some of those times it was only 1 episode of throwing up & then taking it easy...instead of multiply episodes in a day/etc. priscillawallace at sbcglobal dot net
