Some Cheap Ways We Have Fun!

Tuesday, May 05, 2009 Posted by Felicia

Even before the economy took a turn for the worse I was looking for cheap or FREE ways to entertain our family. Since I am home with Graham at least 2 1/2 days a week I do like to mix things up a bit!

Here are few of the cheap or FREE things we do:

  • Mother Goose - story time at the local library. Most libraries have this and it is so much more than stories! They do fun nursery rhymes and games that are geared towards their age group. Our library lets them start as early as 4 months! FREE!
  • Trip to the Playground - with the weather starting to warm up we love to head to the playground! When it is raining or cold we visit the local mall play area at the food court! FREE!
  • Take a Walk or Bike Ride - We also find our selves taking a walk. We are lucky enough to have a child's seat on our bike so we can take Graham with us. We have even packed up lunch and gone for a bike ride. FREE depending on where you go.
  • Make Cup Cakes - or you can really make anything that is easy to involve your child! Doing this also helps your child grow their self-esteem and skills! CHEAP!
  • Blow Bubbles - This is something you can either buy cheap or make for free and it is so much fun especially for the little ones! What am I talking about... I love it too! CHEAP!
  • Dance! - Sometimes we turn the music up loud to his favorite songs and dance until we are sleepy! FREE!
What is it that you do to have some FREE or CHEAP fun? I would love to hear your ideas!

Great ideas! I'm always looking for new ways to entertain the boys and save money, of course! We just started a new garden- and we are having fun going out each day to water and "watch" the plants grow. We've already had strawberries to pick and my 3 yr old thought it was the neatest thing!

Although you do have to invest in buying some gardening items-in the long run, it will save you since you can grow your own fruit and veggies! :)

Great ideas, we have a pai at the end of out block which is 30 feet from the house and the kids love it. Thanks for sharing.

Great ideas! We love the playground too! I gave my kids the Jenga block game this weekend and it kept them busy for an hour building towers! Thanks for the great ideas!

Lots of great ideas here! If it's nice out, we have a picnic out in the yard, and my daughter loves that!

We have a state park only 30 minutes away and I love taking the boys there to watch the fish in the aquarium being fed--it's free!

Tuesdays are education days at the arboretum and you can go for free. I hiked with Josiah and then we sat down in the garden and he played and climbed and loved it.

We love all of the stuff you mentioned! My favorite is going to a new playplace/playground that they haven't been to in awhile.

Another big hit around here is play-doh. We can get it for less than a dollar a container and I let them use kitchen supplies (like cookie cutters, bread knives etc.) to sharpen their fine motor skills.

Another idea that keeps the boys busy for hours is to buy a small blow-up pool or a dishpan and set it outside full of water and with some cups and sponges etc. for water play - that keeps my boys entertained for a very long time!
