Wordless Wednesday: Great Grandmother's Iris

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 Posted by Felicia

This is not so wordless, but I have to explain. This is not just any iris. This iris has been transplanted from my great grandmother's yard, to my mother's yard and now to mine. It has taken this iris 3 years to actually bloom. I really do not know that much about horticulture, but I my mom is pretty good and says it takes a couple years after transplant for them to bloom. I am so excited that part of my great grandmother's legacy lives on in mine and my mother's yards!

That is beautiful. I used to have Iris growing in my garden back home. But now that we are living in a house that we consider temporary I am only planting vegetables. I love spring and watching the plants and flowers grow.

Beautiful iris. Isn't it special to have plants in the garden that have a family history. Enjoy the blooms. My grandmother also taught me about flower bulbs and vegetable gardening.

I have a kind of simliar story about my great mother iris, they are deep purple and they just stop blooming for about twenty years until my grandma gave me some. They just started blooming again after all that time. I sent my grandma a pic last week.

Very special, I know how you must feel.

Wow! What an awesome family memento! Those irises are something that you can pass on to Graham and his family some day. Wouldn't that be great?
