Music for Kids | Mary Kaye Music
I was recently introduced to a children's music artist who has a very folksy feel! Her name is Mary Kaye and she has been writing children's music for about 10 years! She has a brand new album that will be released July 2nd titled Music Box. Learn a little more about Mary Kaye here:"When I was a child, I was so shy that I didn't talk in kindergarten. (I would talk at home, but not at school.) The teacher suggested that I take theatre classes. Lucky for me, there was a theatre right across from my house, so my mom would walk me across the street and I would take classes. I kind of grew up with this theatre company. I would see all of the shows and was the "kid" in quite a few of them. Theatre became a way for me to come out of my shell and finally start talking in public. I was in the chorus as a "townsfolk" person in almost every musical you can imagine. Some favorites were Carousel, Oklahoma, and The King And I (where I had my very first line.) My first line was, "Tell us, Mrs. Anna,...what to do when afraid?" (I had a speech problem with my Rs back t
hen, so I actually said, "Tell us, Mrs. Anna,...what to do when afwaid?") Anna (the character) answered in a song called, "Whistle a happy tune." Her message was that music could help you...so I have always taken that to heart. I spent some time as a professional actress and that is how I met my husband who is an actor/director and is now also a professor of theatre. I taught theatre to children with several of the company's I worked with and ended up going back to school to get my Master's in elementary education. As a teacher, I integrated the arts into the curriculum whenever I could. I found that theatre and art became a tool to help a lot of kids express themselves in ways they never could before. I was teaching a poetry unit with my fifth grade class and was inspired by the poems my students were writing. I told them, that if they wanted me to, I would put their work into a poetry play with music. I put out a folder on my desk for their poems and it was soon overflowing. Every student added a poem to the folder. That is when I started writing music. The poetry play had masks and dance and puppets and MUSIC.
I have two elementary age daughters, now, and have been staying home with them and writing music about our adventures together. They teach me new things every day. Most of the songs on this record are about something one of them said or did. Family is probably my favorite song on this CD, because it is so autobiographical. This is my fourth CD of music for children, so I guess I have been writing kids' music for almost ten years. My husband and I tour a children's theatre/music piece with my songs in it. It is wonderful to meet different families, and it brings me tremendous joy to see kids dancing and singing along to the songs I have written.
We live in Maine and love to walk along the ocean."
Graham really loves the very first song on her new album! It is titled Under the Moon and talks about all of the animals that walk under the moon. The fun part about the song is it includes sound effects that you would hear from these animals and starts to become a fun round! A lot of Mary Kaye's songs on the Music Box album involve different simple sounds that Graham enjoys listening to.
Like I said earlier, she has a folksy feel to me that is very natural. It is definitely a different style of kids music than what Graham is already listening to. I love that she tells stories with her music, stories that kids can understand and relate to. We also love how she gets you up and moving with her silly beats!

Mouse Jamboree is my favorite song because it reminds me of the Teddy Bear's Picnic, one of my favorite kid songs...only with mice.
