Labor Day. A Very New Meaning These Days.

Monday, September 07, 2009 Posted by Felicia

I can't help but think of the millions of Americans who will not be enjoying a relaxing vacation from work today. For many, they will still be surfing the Internet for jobs just like they have been every day for months. The job crisis hits close to home as I have family members who have lost jobs over the year and even have one who has been unemployed for nearly a year now. Even if you are still employed you may have experienced pay cuts as our family has.

Many of you know I started back to work last week, and it was very bitter sweet. There were several faces in the school where I work that did not rejoin us because their jobs were not spared. It isn't very comforting when you hear words like, "Brace yourselves for the worst because it has yet to come". Our enrollment is down considerably and I can't help but think it is because there are no jobs to move here for, or people are unable to sell houses in order to move.

So, needless to say, Labor Day to me, has a whole new meaning this year. However, no matter what your current job situation is, I hope you are able to take the time today to spend with those you love the most doing what you love the most. We plan on taking some time out to do some things that Graham would enjoy that he does not normally have the opportunity to do.

Has Labor Day changed for you at all? How are you spending this Labor Day?

I definitely agree. The economy is so bad right now. I have so many friends and family who have lost their jobs just over the past year. Congrats on your new job and I'm glad you're keeping optimistic! We try to keep our chins up too. Tomorrow for Labor Day we are letting the kids paint their furniture in the garage, color of their choice - this should be interesting hehe. Hope yall and little Graham have a wonderful Labor Day! :)

Our market is finally picking up a little. Johnny's school didn't lay off any teachers but sadly not all the districts around here were as lucky.

Today was spent working and trying desperately to make ends meet. My DH and I were both in the real estate/construction industries and we have been struggling for the last 2 years...ever since the 'bubble' burst. I have really started pursuing coupons and other deals passionately so that we can keep food on the table. Every little bit helps, as they say.
I know that the lessons we have learned from these hard times will remain with us as money problems get better and that down the road will be much wiser with every dollar.

I know just what you mean, we had to go to the court house on Tuesday for something and there were so many people there filing for bankruptcy and surrendering their homes and cars it was sad. The unemployment rate in some parts of Florida is up to 15%. There were young couples (with small children) who didn't have jobs; plus older couple, where the men had worked so long at a job and then all of a sudden lost it.
My advice to people is to buy American as much as you can ~ so we can save as many of our neighbors jobs as possible.
    God bless America!
