Overcoming School Anxiety Book Review

Saturday, September 12, 2009 Posted by Felicia

School anxiety can be such a huge issue among kids. There are several students who are afraid to go to school, participate, and can really get worked up over the issue (to the point of needing medical attention sometimes). Since we are at the start of school for many, this is the perfect time to tell you about a book by Diane Peters Mayer that is called, Overcoming School Anxiety that I was able to review thanks to the Family Review Network.

Diane offers several tips depending on the situation your child happens to be in. Maybe they won't go to school, have test or homework anxiety, or are being bullied. There can be so many different levels and situations when you are talking about school anxiety. Diane is a psychotherapist that has been treating children and adults with anxiety disorder for 17 years in Pennsylvania. There are easy to learn techniques as well as guides on how to eat, exercise, and breathe to relieve stress and deal with stressful situations.

You can purchase Overcoming School Anxiety for about $10.88 at Amazon.
Here are some summer tips Diane offers to help prepare your child for school:

  • Have your child learn a new skill: swimming, boating, a sport, musical instrument, art class, etc. to increase self worth and help with social skills.
  • Limit TV and computer time: Engage their mind and body instead!
  • Enroll your child in yoga or martial arts: These teach relaxation and discipline.
  • Create a family scrapbook of things you do and summer vacations: A fun way to help children with reading, writing, and spelling during the summer.
  • Visit the public library often for story time and events: What a great, free resource! Not only will this help build verbal and reading skills, it also helps with socialization. You could even come up with a fun incentive program for them reading a certain amount of books that they pick out.
  • Familiarize a child entering Kindergarten or going to a new school about what their day will be like: Knowing what to expect is a great way to lessen anxiety.
  • Arrange play dates with a student a year ahead of your child as school: Just make sure this older child likes school and can talk about it positively.
  • Have your child help you plan meals, shop for the food, and cook: A great way to talk about math, and healthy foods! Also teaches some responsibility.
  • Do crossword and sudoku puzzles with your child: Card games are also great for keeping your child's mind engaged and practicing math!
Does your child struggle with School Anxiety? What have you done to help conquer their fears?

Great ideas... wish this book was around when my youngest was having trouble in school, it would have come in handy.
    Thanks for the review.
