Chicken, French Fries, and Christmas Lights...

Monday, December 07, 2009 Posted by Felicia

"We're gonna get chicken, french fries, and Christmas lights...ok?" is what we heard from the back seat of the car last night.

Nothing warms my heart more than to hear Graham voice his little opinions. Don't get me wrong, there are moments when I wish he was not so forth coming with the opinions, but these kinds of opinions are great!

I have to remind myself to be patient with him...but I find that I am doing this a lot less now that he is getting older. For any of you who have young ones, trust me, it really doesn't get a lot easier, but what is hard changes. Does that make sense? I am so thankful that he is able to verbally express what it is that he wants or needs at this point in his little life. And I am also thankful that we can start to let him in on some of the Christmas traditions that are a part of our lives.

Graham dug into his chicken and fries and even played a little game of "camera" using the holes in the chicken box. How fun to watch his little imagination work!

My husband and I treated ourselves to some Starbucks and then headed to the next destination...Christmas lights! Every year the local Parks and Rec put on a pretty cool drive through light show near the lake. It is only $5 and tonight we took two spins around the light show because Graham enjoyed it so much.

My advice is to cherish every simple moment like this one, think about how much your child is growing, and delight in the fact that every old tradition to us is a brand new one to them!

I love it when kids say things like this! My 4 year old says crazy things a lot of the time. He tries to say bigger words then what he can understand.

Wow, those are amazing lights, my daughter would love those!

I also love this age because i finally get to know what she is thinking & her likes/dislikes! it's so cool to see! But like you, I have found new challenges, LOL!!

That's so cute! You are so right about the way things change as they get older! I have learned with my four that though the physical drain gets easier it then becomes an emotional and mental battle of sorts. Trying to teach them those key characteristics that you want them to retain as adults. All the while scared to death that you're messing up some where. :D Sometimes I would gladly return to chasing after them as toddlers. Even though I was exhausted all the time, at least it was pretty cut and dry: love them, feed them, bathe them, dress them, rock them to sleep, read to them, play with them, and try not to lose them. :D No worrying about teaching them to not lie, to respect others, to have the right priorities, read their Bible and pray, lean on God fully for everything, etc. While the task may get more difficult... how great the reward!

I'm glad he liked the light show. My step-son really liked going to them when he was young, then he hit twelve and he wasn't really interested in them anymore.

That is too cute! It is nice when they can verbally express what they want, although there are times I wish I had a mute button! LOL!
I can't wait until we go see Christmas lights! I think we're going this weekend. So fun!

I miss that age, though I couldn't wait to be out of it when I was in it. My six year old can talk up a storm, never stops talking really, and her vocabulary is nearly as good as mine. I miss watching the light bulb go on above her head. It still happens not as frequently as it did when she was littler.

I love it when their little personalities start coming through and they express their opinions. It is so wonderful when we can let them have their way in certain things, and don't have to always say no. I'm glad you had a great night, I LOVE looking at Christmas lights!
Can't wait for more Christmas pictures with you and Graham.
