Family Reading Night Challenge from V Tech

Monday, July 12, 2010 Posted by Felicia

Because I am such an advocate for reading and reading to your children early, I am honored to be participating in this campaign with V Tech and The Motherhood.  They have come up with a fun challenge that may help develop some really wonderful habits in your own household.  This giveaway is very different from others, so please make sure you read carefully.

Photobucket

We all know how important it is to read and reading together as a family can make a lasting impression.  The challenge for you, my readers, is to TURN OFF the TVs tonight and break out the books.  We got rid of our DirectTV several months ago and it has made a huge difference for our family.  We rarely turn on the TV and we all spend a lot more time reading.  Graham loves traditional books, but he has also been enjoying the animated stories on his V.Reader of the past two weeks.  I love that we can all be involved as a family with the V.Reader.  Graham can watch the words light up as they are read, or we can just read to him traditionally.  At night we have been reading together with the V.Reader to shake things up a bit.

I have a brand new Ted Dekker book that I have been itching to dig into (only on Chapter 4).  It has been a rainy day today, so I think that after dinner I will crack open my new book, have my husband and Graham read together with the V.Reader for a while and enjoy an evening of relaxation and learning!

This product was provided free of charge by VTech and The Motherhood. These are my honest opinions on the product. I do not post reviews on products I can not stand behind. Please see my Terms of Use for more info.

This giveaway has ended!  Congratulations to Dawn Sollitto!

We had family reader night last night too. We actually have been doing Hooked on Phonics with our son Justin and we started the first few books. He will be starting kindergarten in the fall. I was so happy to see that he almost read the first book to us unassisted! We then read his favorite book "The Easter Cub". Our 11th month old tries to eat all the books so sometimes it is a challenge!

"I love you forever, I like you for always" is one of our all time favorites, going back to my almost 19 yr old, so it's great to get back to that again....someday I see myself rocking & singing that to my grandbabies, that's how important & timeless classic bookreading can be....

My boys don't read yet so I usually read I love you forever. My sister in law gave me the book when I was pregnant and I get misty eyed every time I read it. That is how I feel about by boys but without all the crawling across the room.

We had Family Reading Night last night, which happens most nights around here. The 11 year old got to read for a half hour before turning off her light, which she loves. The 19-month-old read 4 stories with us, listening and pointing to different things in the pictures when asked. Fun as always!

We have been reading a lot lately too. My daugther starts kindergarten in the fall and she is really getting good at reading by herself. Last night she read to me and her sister Fancy Nancy. Then she read a story out of her hooked on phonics book to daddy. When kids were in bed i read a couple of chapters from the book i am reading.

Well, fortunately we had our granddaughter here last night, and we made it a Family Reading Night. We read all the "Frances" books....Bedtime for Frances, A Baby Sister for Frances, and then she decided she wanted to look at our son's I Spy Books and find things, so we read that, mostly pictures. We spread a knit blanket on the floor in the living room, had a bowl of popcorn, and enjoyed her company very much.

Everyone in our house enjoys reading. My husband and I read every night before bed. My daughter reads so much that I have to beg her to put her books down (she'll even hide out in the bathroom reading!) My 2-year-old loves to be read to, which we do often. His current favorite is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. I love that it's helping him learn about rhymin (he likes to finish the rhymes for me). I wanted to so something special for Family Reading Night, where we could all enjoy a book together. I was inspired by one of my daughter's current favorite books by Shel Silverstein and decided it would be fun to take turns reading and acting out the Shel Silverstein poems. Although some of the poems are a bit challenging to act out, they are all so funny and entertaining. I really enjoyed watching my daughter recite/act the poem "I cannot go to school today" - she wore a bathrobe and is a great little actress! This is something we'll definitely have to do again, especially as my son grows older and can participate more. Thanks for the motivation to do some creative reading!

MANDATORY ENTRY: Last night my daughter picked out a book for 'us' to read to each other. First, I read a story from the book of children's stories. After I was done with my story, then my daughter read me the same story, but instead of reading the story word for word, she read me the story according to the pictures. It was so much fun. Her six year old mind is so wild and creative. Gosh, I don't remember being that creative and descriptive. Did I really 'birth' this child? Hee-hee-hee! I love my little girl, she is so me!

Reading is a part of visits with my granddaughter. I begin reading first and turn it over to her when it gets very interesting.

We actually end up having a reading night for our daughter almost every night, the TV stays off in the evenings until she is in bed, and we read together, whatever she wants! But last night we had a reading night for us too and didn't watch tv.

I am a teacher, so we do Family Reading Night most nights. Right now we are reading a new chapter book together. As we make dinner I read aloud to the boys. We talk about it and make predictions about what will happen next - even my three year old.
