For those of you who know me or have been following Go Graham Go for a while know that I really like to make my own food (as opposed to frozen) for several different reasons.  One of those reasons is cost and another is to make sure I know what I am feeding my family.  But, I will be the first to admit that there are many days when I am beat and everyone is hungry and I don't want to pay to go out to dinner.  In those moments I will turn to frozen food on occasion.


I will generally only buy 2 different brands of chicken nuggets for Graham (he loves those things) and one of those brands is Banquet.  We have also tried out their family meals when I've been in a pinch for time (Macaroni and Cheese and Lasagna being our favorites). 

Right now Banquet is saying, "Thanks a Million" to their customers by offering more than $1 million dollars worth of cash  prizes from now until April.  Just look for the Banquet boxes that have the "Thanks a Million" logo on the cover.  You could win or receive a coupon.  They are offering 16,000 redeemable cash prizes.  I think the coupon would be prize enough for me!

Are you the type of parent that likes to be outdoors or moving a lot with your baby?  Maybe you should check out the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Air.  I know we had another version of baby carrier when Graham was tiny and I was always sweating in it!  Not to mention, Graham was always sweating.  It could not have been comfortable for him.

Graham has been enjoying the Mandy and Andy Renovating iPhone app lately.  We were able to review this new app from BeiZ Ltd.  This is a story for your iPhone that can either be read or read aloud to your child.  It is like having a pop-up or lift the flap book on your iPhone!


The story is about Mandy, Andy, Uncle Tobias and Mortimer Mouse.  They are all on a mission to renovate their friend Hermie the Hermit's cottage.  The problem is that the cottage has some animals taking up residence!  They all work together to try and repair the cottage until they come upon a better solution.  They decide to build a brand new cottage and let the animals live peacefully in the old on.

Graham loves to click on the different points of the picture to reveal the hidden inhabitants.  He is generally drawn to this app over the others lately.  The one thing that could be tweaked about this app is that fact that the arrows you press to move from one page to the next seem to be noticeably louder than the rest of the story.  I always have to turn the volume of my phone down to about 3 bars.  Besides English, Mandy and Andy Renovating is also available in French and simplified Chinese.

I haven't found a preschooler yet who isn't a fan of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!  Graham was an instant fan from the moment he first watched an episode.  Now, in honor of the Olympics, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! has come out with a brand new 82 minute DVD called "Go for Gold".  The new episode started airing February 16th.


If you have a huge Wubbzy fan you might want to pick up the DVD that includes seven episodes revolving around athletics and being a good sport.  Included in the episodes is Michelle Kwan and Tiki Barber.  You and your kids will enjoy their Wuzzerific cartoon counterparts!  There are also coloring and activity pages as well as music videos included on the DVD.





My favorite episode is the first one which features Michelle Kwanzzleberry (Michelle Kwan).  All of Wuzzleburg is preparing for the Wuzzleburg Wacky Dash.  Michelle reminds the contestants to prepare, practice, and most importantly...have fun!  It seems no one but Daizy wants to heed the advice as new inventions are made to try and prevent practicing and preparing.  Daizy takes it all in stride, studies the race route, does some jump roping, and decides to have fun!  Who do you think wins in the end?

All of the episodes have the same wonderful messages you would expect from Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! that will keep your kids entertained.  Graham would watch it all day long if I let him.  "Go for Gold" retails for about $16.98.  Also, be on the look out for an 8X8 paperback book from Scholastic.

I was recently inspired by a post at The Thrifty Mama about "How We Cut Cable and Still Watch Our Favorite Shows."  I have been thinking for a while about how much money we waste each month on our DirectTV bill.  Sure, it is a lot less than some people's, but still too much for us!  We really don't watch TV enough to be paying those hefty bills.  Most of the shows that we are loyal to come on local stations anyway.



So what did we do?

I took portions of what Crystal wrote about and made it work for our family and our budget.  First of all, I earn Amazon gift cards a few different ways.  One of those ways is through SwagBucks!  If you do not use SwagBucks you need to start!  You earn points just for searching for things on the Internet (something we all do every day).  Those points add up and you can redeem them for things like Amazon gift cards!  Fridays are Mega SwagBucks days when you can earn even more by searching.  You automatically earn 3 SwagBucks just for signing up.


I used the Amazon gift cards I had saved up and purchased this Direct DB4 Multi Directional HDTV Antenna.  I thought I should go mid range since we live in a rural location ($38.73).  You can find out about your local stations and the reception map for your area to get an idea of what stations you may receive.

HDTV Station List (just press ctrl + F and enter the closest major city's name in the search box)

Use this Antenna Mapping Website in order to find out the best direction and location to place your antenna.  Just enter your street address and zip code.  Make sure to uncheck the boxes at the bottom and do not submit your email unless you want marketing emails in your inbox.

Streaming Netflix, Hulu and more.



Option 1 (You want to stream from your computer):
We are lucky enough to own two laptops, but if you are not, you can also use your desk top computer if it is close to your TV (I'm assuming you know you need an Internet connection).  In order to use this method you will need a VGA Cable with 3.5mm audio (or look up the compatability of your computer and TV).  This will take care of the picture as well as the audio when you connect your TV and the computer.  You can purchase Netflix for $8.99 per month and stream a ton of different movies and television shows to your TV.  Typically there is a 2 week free trial when you sign up.  What I love about it is you can watch the shows instantly and they also send videos in the mail that you have put in your Queue.  Once you send a movie back, they automatically send the next choice in your line up.  You can also stream Hulu which is FREE!  Both Netflix and Hulu offer most of the popular shows that you and your family are watching.

Tip:  We use Zinc TV in order to make it easier to navigate streaming shows.  What Zinc TV does is incorporates all of the providers in one place (Netflix, Hulu, etc) and lets you organize it all from one location.  It really makes this process a lot smoother.

Option 2 (You do not want to stream with a computer):
You can go in several different directions:

• Blu-Ray Player (only certain ones work so look for the one with the Netflix logo)
• Roku player (starts at $79.95 which can be cheaper than the Blu-Ray)
• Playstation 3, XBOX 360, Wii (coming this spring)
• Internet Ready HDTVs (expensive!)

Tip:  Make sure to double check what all they will stream.  The internet ready HDTVs do it all I think.  We aren't rich enough to own one of those bad boys!

**If you DO NOT have an HD ready TV then you are going to need to buy a converter box or a new TV.  You can buy a converter box for about $40 at Amazon depending on what you want.  You will need this in order to pick up the local stations from the antenna.

Bottom Line:
The trick to all of this is doing your research and deciding what is going to be the cheapest option in the long run for your family.  Sometimes you have to spend a little extra in order to save in the long run.  It is all about priorities and finding what works for you.  For our family, we are instantly saving $600 a year!  That is important to me!  I have actually found that this method allows are family to spend LESS time in front of the television and lets Graham watch shows he loves any time without waiting for them to air (ok... us too)!

Did you know that by the time your 4 year old reaches college the cost is more than likely going to be astronomical?  The cost of college tuition seems to be rising every year.  I know it is something we are definitely saving for already for Graham and future children.


Next Direct, one of Britain's most popular brands, is launching in the US.  In order to celebrate this huge accomplishment they are holding a modeling competition to find the new face of Next Direct for ages 4-7.  You can upload your child's picture to their Facebook page and let the public vote.  The top 50 finalists will be invited to Universal Studios on April 24th where they will then choose the winner.  Not only will the child receive a $100,000 scholarship, but they will also receive a one year modeling contract with Wilhelmina Models.

Chronicle Books has several wonderful children's books.  Now they are offering choices for your iPhone!  This is very exciting to a mother who depends on her iPhone pretty much all the time.  It is nice to know I can have a quality book on the go for Graham without packing the library!
