One thing you are going to need as a new mom is a travel crib.  We have used ours on so many different occasions that it easily paid for itself within the first few months.  There were two things that were hard about it, the amount of room it took up and the weight.  I recently had the opportunity to try out the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light which, I believe, should be on every mother's wish list.

This crib is so simple that it comes already assembled.  I remember my husband getting frustrated putting together our other travel crib.  The BabyBjorn Travel Light Crib was ready to go as soon as I pulled it out of the box!  The crib only weighs 11 pounds which makes it super easy to carry upstairs or lug along in a big hotel.  It comes with it's own carrying case that it conveniently folds into.  The BabyBjorn Travel Light Crib, when folded and in it's case, looks like you are carrying a bag.  You can put it over your shoulder and hit the road!





The other part of our last travel crib that was tricky was putting it up and taking it down.  After a few times, we got the hang of it, but it was always hard for others to operate it.  The BabyBjorn Travel Light Crib can be opened in basically one movement.  I was able to set it up by myself as soon as I opened the box.  The travel crib was literally out of the box and set up in our living room in about 5 minutes!







Parents are also going to love that the fabric is completely machine washable (mattress cover and bed fabric).  Honestly, I don't know why a company would manufacture a baby product that is not machine washable!  It just makes sense.  The mattress pad is nice and thick which makes it comfy for babies.  The BabyBjorn Travel Light Crib is available in Blue and Silver (Silver is not available in Canada) and retails for about $279.99.  This crib is great for newborns all the way up to about 3 years old.

Call me southern, but nothing beats a delicious Tomato Sandwich when the spring and summer roles around.  I know that this isn't much of a recipe, but truly, if you haven't tried one, you need to!  I think what makes the sandwich is having quality mayo and also quality bread.  My favorite bread is Texas Toast and the ONLY mayo in the south is Duke's!  This is also a very inexpensive meal idea (especially since a lot of families grow their own tomatoes).

Ingredients:
One large ripe tomato peeled and sliced to the thickness you desire
Texas Toast bread
Mayo
Salt
Pepper
Your favorite cheese

Preparation:
Add mayo to both slices of bread and add your cheese.  Place the tomato slices on top of the cheese.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste over the tomatoes.  Heat a frying pan to medium low heat and add a dab of butter to the pan to deter sticking.  Grill the sandwich for a few minutes on each side until light brown.  Enjoy!

The HEXBUG Ant is another great option for the fast paced kid in your life.  Have you ever seen a trail of ants on the ground and put down a stick or something in front of them?  They generally turn and start in the opposite direction.  The HEXBUG Ant does just about the same thing.  Once it is going it will keep moving forward until it encounters an obstacle.  The Ant will then head in the opposite direction, only it goes backwards.  Another nice feature is that it will run in carpet.  The HEXBUG Ant retails for about $11.99.

So, it seems that the only time I ever am in the mood for a glass of milk is when I am pregnant.  Both pregnancies have brought horrendous heart burn that requires loads and loads of milk.  Maybe that is why I have Gargantua sized babies?  Well, we will find out next week just how large baby number 2 is (as well as the gender).  I have always heard that your body will generally crave what you need, especially when you are pregnant.  Maybe that is why so many women claim to crave ice cream?


March is National Nutrition Month and the Midwest Dairy Council wants to make sure you all are informed about the importance of dairy in your diets.  Of course, we are all aware of the calcium that dairy provides, but what about the other essential nutrients and vitamins?  Here are some:

Vitamin D: Promotes calcium absorbtion
Protein: Builds and repairs muscles
Potassium: Helps maintain a healthy blood pressure
B12: Helps maintain healthy red blood cells and nerve tissue (also can help with depression)

(I also think they need to mention that it helps us preggos with heartburn!  Or, maybe that is all in my mind.)

I just wanted to write a quick note to let you all know that I am sorry I haven't been as present lately.  Life has been a bit crazy and both my son and I have been dealing with this yuckiness that seems to be going around (coughing, runny nose, sore throat, feeling drained, etc).  Being sick on top of 17 weeks pregnant, caring for a preschooler, and working my regular job has worn me down.  Last night I was so uncomfortable that I got up at about 5am to sleep on the couch for an hour before work.  I was so exhausted that I woke up right when I needed to leave.  To say that my body needs some rest and a break is an under statement.  I am working on catching up on emails and things should be back to normal soon.  Graham is starting to have less symptoms so that must mean that whatever this is should be hitting the road!  Thank you to everyone who has been stopping by and sending messages.  You all are so amazing and sweet!

We have been trying to cut back as much as we can around here and have even been looking into how much money we are wasting on energy costs.  A few years ago when our washer and dryer broke we decided to spend a few extra dollars and purchase the energy efficient models.  We also started slowly replacing our light bulbs as they would die with energy efficient alternatives.  Every little bit makes a difference!

The thing we first noticed about the compact fluorescent light bulbs was that we had to get used to the way the light looked.  It was definitely different from what we were using before.  SYLVANIA has a new energy saving light bulb that looks just like a regular light bulb (no weird looking tubes).  The SuperSaver Light Bulb actually saves you up to 33% when compared to incandescent lamps.  They are mercury free and dimmable.  I like the fact that the light seems more natural than some of the compact fluorescent bulbs we have been using.

Graham's art supplies are starting to overwhelm our house!  I am glad that he likes to be artistic and create things, but I was getting tired of picking the marker and crayons out of the various toy bins and cubes in our house.  Not to mention, every time he wanted to draw, I had to find his giant coloring pad that is usually stored behind his dresser (we are out of room).

 The following is a recipe that I've enjoyed ever since I was a child.  It is my Great-Grandmother's Potato Candy Recipe and it is still good!  My great grandmother's family was from Ireland which is where this recipe originated from I'm sure.  Because of its age, there are no exact measurements!  Don't worry...it is easy!

Ingredients:
1 Large Potato (Irish Potato)
Powdered Sugar
Peanut Butter
Wax Paper

Instructions:
Boil potato until mushy and drain water off.  Cut into small pieces and mash up potatoes in a bowl.  Add powdered sugar a little at a time and stir.  You want to add until it is the consistency of dough.  Put down a sheet of wax paper and sprinkle it with powdered sugar.  Put your dough onto the wax paper and place another piece of wax paper on top and roll it out as thin as possible.

Spread peanut butter in the middle of the rolled out dough and leave a little room around the edges.  Roll the dough into a tight roll (as tight as you can get it). Slice into candy sized pieces. It's ready to eat! You can store it in the refrigerator and save some for later.

There is a new favorite in our house lately and I have to be honest and tell you that I am a fan as well.  Have you seen Charlie and Lola yet?  It is from the BBC and is based on the popular Charlie and Lola books by Lauren Child.

The new DVD, Charlie and Lola Volume 10: I Can't Stop Hiccuping, is an hour and a half long and features 9 episodes.  Lola and her brother Charlie are always trying to solve different problems.  I even looked at my husband mid way through the show and said, "I hope our two children get along this well."  The first episode is a cute one in which Lola gets the hiccups as she and her friend Lotta are practicing their song for the school concert.  This is a cute episode that kept Graham laughing as Lola tries many different tactics in order to end her hiccups.  Her brother Charlie is right there with her trying to help her solve the problem as well.  If you have read any of the Charlie and Lola books you are going to want to check out this DVD as well.  Graham asks us to watch it over and over again.  Make sure you have a glass of strawberry milk handy!

I am usually in the world of boy around here, so I love it when I have the opportunity to see new little girl products!  Graham's friend Claire was sent a sweet new doll by Plamates Toys called the MY PIXIES doll.


I was not expecting this doll to be so big!  Claire was more than excited to receive her.  She has been carrying her around every since.  The doll is gorgeous in my opinion.  It reminds me of the types of dolls that I loved to have when I was a little girl.  I must say that I have been disappointed in doll manufacturers lately for making dolls too "womanly" and provocative.  I love how this doll is so "little girl" friendly.  We were sent the purple Lilli Lollipop doll.  There are currently two to choose from.  These sweet dolls even have a fragrance to them!  That was one of the first things Claire noticed about Lilli.  Her wings are removable as well as her soft shoes and tutu.

This is the first in the brand new line that Playmates Toys is creating.  I am excited to see what's to come with these.  MY PIXIES are currently in limited edition availability in Kmart stores nationwide.

Our family has been saving quite a bit of money each week just by me being more organized and intentional about what we are buying.  I don't have to use a ton of coupons to easily cut my grocery bill in half.  What have I been doing you ask?  I have been meal planning and taking inventory of the things we have on hand.  I have literally taken our grocery bill from about $100 a week down to about $50 a week.  This includes buying organic meat.

I was recently contacted by Karin Brough who is one of the sisters behind a brand new software called The Dinner Solution.  This software is a smart way to help you menu plan and organize so that you save!  If you find yourself spending over $100 a week on groceries or taking your family out to dinner more than once or twice a week, you might want to look into doing some menu planning.  Not only can it be healthier, but it is also easier on your wallet!

The Dinner Solution has been a great way for me to organize.  I can easily plan a week at a time (my brain just won't allow for more).  If you want to plan even further in advance you can do that as well.  There are recipes that are included with The Dinner Solution software, or you can easily add your own.  Once you have your meals added and planned...my favorite part...it prints out a grocery list for you!  All you have to do is add on the household items (if you need to buy any) and you are finished with your grocery list!  For me, this is half the battle!

You can also organize with The Dinner Solution by printing out freezer labels or inventory lists so that you aren't buying 2 more boxes of fruit bars on top of the 4 you already have in the cabinet (can you tell I have done this before).  Having an inventory also helps you make the most of what you have which saves you big bucks in the check out line.
