Pocoyo SwiggleTraks Review

Pocoyo SwiggleTraks Review

One of my favorite items from the Time to Play event in NYC was the Pocoyo SwiggleTraks.  If you have small children in your home then you are probably familiar with the Pocoyo series that airs on PBSKids and Nick Jr.  It is an adorable little show for preschoolers that features a little boy, elephant, duck and other fun characters.  The Pocoyo SwiggleTraks are just one of the items in  a series of fun toys for kids that feature Pocoyo characters.

So, what are the SwiggleTraks?  In my opinion they are a great introduction to train sets or other motorized vehicles for your kids.  The interlocking tracks are great for teaching kids fine motor skills.  While they take some finesse, it will be great practice and fun for the beginners.  The pieces are big and chunky which are great for little hands.  What I love the most about the tracks is the fact that when they are pieced together they are flexible and allow for many different fun combinations.  You can even create a circle and allow your motorized Pocoyo car to move along like a hamster in a ball!  The set also features a moving bridge which is exciting for young eyes to watch.  The Pocoyo car plays music along with the buttons on the track.

If I had to change anything about this set it would be that the tracks themselves feel a bit thin.  I love the size, but I wish they were thicker or more sturdy.  With that said, they hold up well and probably need to be thin for flexibility sake.

You can purchase the Pocoyo SwiggleTraks from Amazon for about $23.46.  What a great gift idea for the little ones fine tuning those motor skills!  Great for ages one and up.

LeapFrog Peek-a-Shoe Talking Octopus Review

LeapFrog Peek-a-Shoe Talking Octopus Review

There is a new sea friend that is becoming a favorite around our house.  It is the LeapFrog Peek-a-Shoe Talking Octopus!  Not only is this guy cute, but he is educational and fun.

Davis is 14 months old and this is the perfect age for Peek-a-Shoe in my opinion.  He is at that age of curiosity where he is trying to soak in every ounce of learning he can in the quickest amount of time possible.  As soon as we took Peek-a-Shoe out of the box he was intrigued with him.  He now holds the coveted spot on the floor in Davis's room where the "fun toys" hang for several months before being put in the toy bin or closet (we rotate toys).

The LeapFrog Peek-a-Shoe Talking Octopus was the 2011 winner of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award and rightfully so.  This cute little guy introduces colors, counting, sea animals and problem solving skills all in one fun toy.  Davis can sit and play with this thing for extended amounts of time.  Each shoe has a different color as well as pictures of different sea animals.  When your child drops in the balls they spin around the inside and hide under the shoes.  Your child needs to lift the shoes in order to find the ball.  As they lift the Peek-a-Shoe Octopus they learn!  There is a music button located on the collar of the octopus that you can press for dancing fun as well.

There are a few things that I would improve on the Peek-a-Shoe.  I wish that there was a little more to the base so that it wouldn't tip as easily.  I find Davis picking up the entire Octopus in order to find the balls sometimes.  I also wish there was a place to store the balls.  We end up loosing the balls underneath things.  The good news is that you can purchase more if you loose them completely!

If you have a child ages 6 months-36 months this is such a great gift idea for Christmas.  You can purchase the Peek-a-Shoe Talking Octopus on Amazon for $24.96 right now.

This giveaway has ended.  Congrats to Erin!

Easy Creamed Corn Using Frozen Corn {recipe}

Easy Creamed Corn Using Frozen Corn {recipe}

Davis discovered a brand new food addiction this Thanksgiving.  Creamed Corn.  We generally have a few bags of frozen vegetables in the freezer at any given time (because they contain the same nutrients as fresh) and I happened to have some frozen corn hanging out.  I thought to myself, I should make my baby some really awesome homemade creamed corn!  I think it turned out pretty great and it was super easy.  This is one of those recipes that you are going to have to eyeball and taste to make it work for you and your corn!

Easy Cream Corn Recipe

Ingredients:
1 bag of frozen corn
2 or 3 tablespoons of butter
2 or 3 tablespoons of flour
1 or 2 cups of milk
1 tablespoon sugar
salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:
Cook your frozen corn and drain.  Melt your butter down in the saucepan.  If you are using an entire bag of cream corn then you are going to use about 3 tablespoons.  Cut this recipe down if you are using less.  Once the butter is melted begin adding your flour and whisk it in until it is blended together.  It may be clumpy.  Start whisking your milk into the pan on medium-low heat.  I generally pour about a half cup of milk at a time so that I can make sure I am not making it too thin.  Keep in mind that if you are using skim milk it will be more watery (that's what I use).  Keep pouring in the milk until it reaches the consistency you would like.  The longer it sits the thicker the sauce will become.  Add in your sugar, salt and pepper and mix well.  Dump in your cooked corn, mix and you are good to go for creamy goodness!

Visit Balancing Beauty and Bedlam for more recipe ideas!

Children Inspire Design: Modern, Eco-Friendly Art for Kids

Children Inspire Design: Modern, Eco-Friendly Art for Kids

If you haven't already seen the options from artist Rebecca Peragine you really need to check out Children Inspire Design.  All of the images she creates start out from recycled materials.  She takes magazines and other products and tares them into pieces to create these beautiful products.

We were sent the Solar System Wall Cards for review.  I picked these for a few different reasons.  First of all, Davis's room is "solar system" inspired.  He has everything from rockets to planets adorning his walls and bedding.  Secondly, the colors were so bright and fun that I knew they would be perfect in his room full of bold colors.  Finally, I really loved the educational factor behind them as well.  Graham has really been focusing on the Solar System lately and I knew that he would enjoy teaching his brother about what he already knows.  So, when these came in I quickly made them into a banner to hang from Davis's curtain.  As I punched the holes and strung them up, Graham and I talked to Davis about all of the planets and their order from the sun.  Not only was it fun for Davis, but it was a great refresher for Graham.  He was so proud to share his love of the solar system with his little brother.

Now the Solar System Wall Cards hang as a decoration, but in a few years they will serve the purpose of flash cards for Davis.  I love it when an item serves multiple purposes!  You can purchase several different varieties of Wall Cards from Children Inspire Design for about $22.  They would make great holiday gift ideas for any kid.

Personalized Christmas Ornaments from PersonalizedFree.com

Personalized Christmas Ornaments from PersonalizedFree.com

One of my favorite parts about Christmas is getting out our Christmas tree decorations. While we have the occasional, traditional round ornament thrown in amongst the evergreen sprigs, the majority of our ornaments were all chosen because they represent something. I love reminiscing about what each ornament signifies and it is so much more fun now that our daughters are old enough to remember along with us!

That is why I absolutely love the ornaments at PersonalizedFree. All of their ornaments are unique because they are personalized for you with name, date, etc. Often times, you can even choose the color of hair, skin, gender, etc. to make the ornament even more special.

I was able to choose one ornament for our family to review and it was such a tough choice! I could have chosen from so many great-looking products and any number of them would have been perfect gifts for anyone important in our life--from our favorite babysitter to my daughter's preschool teacher.

They even have ornaments for all the people in your life--like your postal worker, salon technician, and even your dentist (of course, these occupation ornaments would also be great for the person in your life that works in that profession)!

PersonalizedFree.com also has great ornaments for every hobby, pet, and sport you love.  They sell a cute cat ornament purrfect for our sweet gray kitties and even have one that is perfect for me--a runner! In the end, I chose one with five stockings to represent our new family of five.

I was amazed by how quickly they were able to personalize my ornament and ship it to me--we received it four days after we ordered it! So if you are looking for a last-minute, incredibly meaningful Christmas present, please know that it will not take long to have it in your hands and ready to give in less than a week!

I was very impressed with the quality of the ornament as well as the impeccable writing on it--they even managed to fit names with 9-letters on tiny stockings! The ornaments start around $6.50 and go up to $14.50--and all ornaments come with free personalization.

After stints of living in the Midwest, Northeast, and England, the Monkey's Mama (AKA Allie) currently resides in Atlanta with her wonderful husband of 7 years, "J". Together they have three daughters.

MyPublisher.com: Quality Christmas Cards with Free Shipping!

MyPublisher.com: Quality Christmas Cards with Free Shipping!

I adore creating Christmas cards and I really love to have the extras (liners, quality paper, priting, etc) but most of the time I just can't afford the extras.  For several years I have uploaded our pictures to drug store sites and used coupon codes to get cute and affordable personalized Christmas Cards.  I love them, but the paper quality and extras are not there.  So, when I was introduced to MyPublisher.com I was so excited to share them with you!

Actual card is clearer... I took a photo of our card.

I had so much fun browsing through the MyPublisher website to find the perfect card for our family.  The problem is that there are just so many to choose from.  Once I finally chose the design I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was I allowed options for the front of the card, but I could also put pictures and text on the back for no additional charge.  Then, the best surprise of all... FREE envelope liners!  You can even choose your color and design.  Maybe you do not get giddy over this, but these are something I have always wanted but skip over because of the price tag associated with them.  To know that you can receive them for free along with free return address printing is really the icing on the cake.

Once we received our cards from MyPublisher (they came in about 5 days) I was more than pleased with the quality.  They are printed on a paper that is thicker than your typical photo cards and the envelopes are very sturdy.  The envelope liners come separate so you will need to insert them on  your own.  For about $50 I received 30 quality Christmas cards that I am so proud of!

Back of card... photograph

Make sure to check out all of the other offerings from MyPublisher.com (photo books, stationary, calendars and more)!

This giveaway has ended.  Congratulations to Anna!

How to Save Money on Disney World: Your Guide to All the Ins and Outs {Guest Post}

How to Save Money on Disney World: Your Guide to All the Ins and Outs {Guest Post}

First of all, I haven’t been to Disney World in 11 years!  And had only been there once in high school prior to that and then when I was under 5 before that.  So to me, this is a very special thing.  Second of all, I have a 4 ¾ year old and a 3 year old, along with my husband of 11 years.  Thirdly, and most importantly for this blog, I’m a bargain hunter!  So, imagine me, clueless and researching everything top to bottom to get the best deal, but to be able to enjoy our trip thoroughly.  So I hope that something in this helps you.

Crystal and her family at Disney

To begin with, my research and forum hunting has led me over and over to a few specific sites that have helped me tremendously.  When I read a guide or a website talking about Disney, etc… they would always refer me to these sites for the best information and reliable.  After the filters,  when people across the country are saying the same thing, you have to believe there is some truth to it.

Books
I also looked and asked around on the forums for the best suggested books. The overall most suggested books were these:
The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa
PassPorter’s Walt Disney World by Jennifer Marx, Dave Marx, and Allison Marx.

A helpful book lent to me by a friend that was excellent as well with my kids was:
Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers by Lisa Battista
Now that I’ve given you my sources, I’m going to tell you what I did, or maybe in hindsight wish I’d done to get the best deals.

Tickets to Parks
You can’t get a great deal on tickets, it’s just not possible unless you are a Florida resident, in the military, or with certain branches of AAA… or know a cast member who can get you discount tickets.  So, that really does cut out a lot of us, so your best bet is to sign up for the www.mousesavers.com newsletter.  The big newsletter comes on the 15th every month to your email inbox.  Within the newsletter is a ‘private link’ to undercovertourist.com to buy your tickets there.  You save a few dollars this way versus any other way you can go if you are buying tickets for 3 days or more.  This is a very reliable source and link and takes about a week to get your tickets in the mail. The tickets are free shipping and no tax, which is one of the main reasons they are so much cheaper.  Do not trust anyone on eBay or other sites to buy tickets unless they are an authorized dealer.  If the tickets are really cheap and one of the characteristics in my first sentence is not a factor, it is suggested that you are likely going to be ripped off.

Places to Stay
So I have learned that there are a lot of options in respect to places to stay.

Walt Disney World itself has a number of hotels/resorts with easy access to the four parks via Monorail and/or shuttles.  As for how to find a good place, your best bet is to first of all, check the forums and mouse savers for any special deals.  For example mousesavers.com has been advertising the Kids Stay and Play Free promo for several months which means that your kids 9 and under can get Free Disney World Tickets (value of $215 per kid per 3 day ticket).  This is only good though if you are staying in WDW.  Mousesavers also continue to show any other specials any hotels around the area and in WDW promote.

Timeshares are another idea.  There are always timeshare deals to be had, just come with a price of an intense timeshare talk usually.  So if you are willing to go through it, look into deals that Wyndham or other Timeshare companies (if there are others besides Wyndham that is) have, could be very worth it, or not.  Depends on what you’re willing to do.

Travel Discount Companies (i.e. Priceline/Expedia) will usually have deals of price per person including a flight and hotel price.  Keep an eye out, Orlando is a hotspot so you can almost always find a good deal.  Especially if you’ll be flying anyhow, it might turn into a great deal.  Then get in on the Kids Stay and Play Free plan and your kids get free tickets too!!

Online… EBay and VRBO.  Two great places to check into for offsite locations.  A lot of Timeshare holders rent out weeks of their Disney Vacation Club points/rooms online for much cheaper than you’ll get looking yourself at the hotel’s websites.  A lot of people recommend renting from Timeshare holders because the timeshares have excellent rooms and service, and you don’t have to pay for the maintenance fees.

What did I do?  Well, my husband and I decided to go through a short term timeshare trial, buying into so many points to use for one year.  We determined that the cost of our stay at the Wyndham Bonnet Creek will be $333 for 4 nights/5 days.  Our hotel will have an entire kitchen so we plan to save money and cook and eat most meals in the hotel and bring meals for lunch in a cooler.  Our deal also allowed us a free night in a Wyndham hotel so we will stay an extra night in Jacksonville, Fl on our way home with that to extend our trip one more night and go spend a morning on the beach, bringing our trip to 5 nights/6days.

Eating
If you stay at Walt Disney World, you will be offered the Disney Dining Plan.  There are several different plans you can go with, and pay attention to what each offers before you decide.  I’ve heard a lot of talk about these plans positive and negative.  I have heard several friends come back and talk about how much food there was on the dining plan… if you and your spouse think you could share meals, you might want to look into only buying one plan.  The negatives I hear are usually revolving around the fact you have to plan your days around where you are eating because of reservations (which you literally have to make at the non-quick serving restaurants), and that the plans are very regimented and if you want to switch out items or go against the grain with them at all, the cast members at the restaurants are not well equipped at doing it easily.

Character Meals- wow what fun!  I’m so excited we have reserved a breakfast at the Tusker House while we’re at the Animal Kingdom.  I know Donald Duck is there… and I think Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be there too!  But it’s the only place we’ve decided to splurge thus far (this will cost us $70 pre tipping for our family).  But if you’re going, schedule ASAP, for when I called, there was only one time slot the day I wanted to go left… and I called a month in advance.  I am pretty sure other Character Meals fill up before this one though.

Kids Eat Free Card… a card you can buy… costs around $17 through undercover tourist and you get a card with 50 restaurants your kid can eat free at.  You have to have one for each child though.
Or you can eat out in Orlando, or as you go.  But prices al a carte are pretty expensive.  My Passporter shows lunches at around $12 for quick dining per adult.  And my hotel doesn’t offer free breakfast, but yours might.

Transportation
If you don’t have an option but to fly
, obviously research best prices using small and large airlines from your local and next to local airports.  There is a whole suggested system for searching for flights.  Plus we signed up for Southwest.com airlines rewards Visa to get 2 free roundtrip tickets with our first purchase to use within 2 years.  There is an annual fee, but it’s worth 2 free roundtrip tickets.  For those who fly, if you are staying on site at WDW, the airlines will deliver your luggage to your hotel without you having to pick it up from the airport.  It’s an automatic service.  I think there is free shuttling to your hotel as well.  If you are staying offsite, you’ll be paying for transportation from the airport to your hotel.  It includes shuttle, taxi, and/or rental car.  Your best deal might actually be that rental car.

If you are close enough that driving is pretty much a given, consider that the hotels generally have free parking.  If you are staying onsite WDW you have free shuttles into the park so you won’t have parking fees.  If you are staying offsite, then you will have to drive to the parks.  Parking is $14 per day.  You may also want to consider paying for gas with cards with the best gas rewards.

If you are far enough away you can’t decide, consider the length of time it will take you to get to the airport, how early you get there before the flight, the length of time of the flight, any delays, the length of time to get out of the airport, and the hour drive to the hotel.  Mine was looking like 6-7 hours for a nonstop 1hr35min flight vs a 10 hour drive… and having my own car and car seats to get around.

Other Tips
Free Customized Maps
mailed to your home of the 4 parks at customizedmaps.disney.go.com
Autograph books- create your own rather than purchasing at Disney.  Use coupons to Michaels or AC Moore or other craft stores to buys photo albums or scrapbooks. Another option is using discount codes online at picaboo, shutterfly, snapfish to get good deals on photobooks.  Use online Disney photos that look like a picture frame for your photos, leaving a great place on each page for each character to sign by their own pictures.

How to get your best deals:

Sign up for Mousesavers newsletter and get your tickets through the link midmonth.

Get a Disney Rewards Visa.  You can Google it, but usually they give away a free gift card with your first purchase or some other benefit.  I was able to get in on a $200 gift card offer.  Once my statement posts online, I can request my gift card and it’ll be mailed to me in 6-8 weeks.  Other benefits of the card are 1 dream dollar per $100 purchase.  Once you get to so many dream dollars, you can redeem for a Disney card.  This can also be redeemed at Disneyworld.  Bring your Visa and ID, and they will redeem your rewards dollars right there.  Other benefits of the card are a special photo-op and Meet and Greet at Disney when you present your card.  You get a free 5x7 photo at this Meet and Greet.  You will also get a percentage off purchases in Disney Stores.

Sign up on Disney’s sites.  You and your spouse both should.  When you are signed up, Disney randomly sends out ‘pins’ which are numbers/codes that give you special deals for any onsite stays.  You can also call Disney to ask if there is a ‘pin’ associated with your name.  I did, it was only 10% off any Disney purchases for Dining or hotel stays, but I’ve heard people get free dining packages and 40% off their entire stay packages… so this one is worth it to sign up ASAP so you can get best chance of getting a good one.

Completely Research out far in advance to get your best deals.  If you watch these sites, in December a promo was given out for this year, but I wasn’t watching in December.  I suggest start at least 6 months in advance of your trip so you have plenty of options and have time to get reservations. Also research a day before and day after for staying… if we had checked in one day sooner, it was an extra $170 for the trip.  If we had come in the day before that, it was almost double the cost!

Scout Prints at FoFlor.com: Bright, Bold and Fun Prints!

Scout Prints at FoFlor.com: Bright, Bold and Fun Prints!

You guys may recall that we are trying to spruce up the boys bathroom before Christmas guests start to arrive.  It has been on our list of things to do for about 5 years and we are just now getting around to it.  No time like the present I guess!

We were sent one of the new Scout Prints rugs by FoFlor.com for review a few weeks ago and I have been extremely pleased with it.  Of course, this is for a very small guest bathroom so we went with the standard sized rug (17"x27").  The problem we were running into with our old bathroom rug was that it would easily scoot around the floor and create a tripping hazard.  The Scout printed rug from FoFlor has been the perfect solution!  It is created with a rubber backing that truly lays flat (always).  It has never been an issue even with two wild and crazy boys running around this house.  Because the design came from Scout, the colors and patterns are so bright and fun!  There are 29 different bold designs to choose from.  Each rug has color-fast designs and are permanently dyed.  I will say that I have noticed a few spots on ours where water has been splashed.  However, these are machine washable and even can be machine dried.  I'm sure once I throw it in the wash these spots will be gone.

If you are looking for a cute gift idea (maybe for the college student, newly weds or secret santa) or maybe for a fun way to spruce up a room in your house for the holidays, make sure to check out the Scout designs from FoFlor.com!  Prices start at $30.

This product was provided free of charge by Scout. These are my honest opinions on the product. I do not post reviews on products I can not stand behind. Please see my Terms of Use for more info.

Children's Holiday Clothing from Tea Collection

Children's Holiday Clothing from Tea Collection

If you are looking for some beautiful and original ideas this holiday season for kids clothes, check out the gorgeous styles from Tea's Highland Holiday Collection.  Graham and Davis were sent a few pieces from the boy's clothing collection for review and we have received nothing but compliments on all of them.

What is so wonderful about Tea clothing is that it looks great while being comfortable.  It is also very easily dressed up or down which makes the collection very versatile.  We have always been pleased with the quality and have even handed many of them down.  I know that when they make the loop back to Davis that they are still going to be holding up great!

We paired the Guapo Herring Bone Jacket ($79), Fuerte Polo ($22.50) in Amethyst, Paco Stripe Tee ($30) and the Carrot Fit Cords in Indigo ($45) to complete this holiday look for Graham.  Doesn't he look cute but "big boy"!  Love it!  The boots are from Crocs and are some of our favorites.

We went a little more casual with Davis and paired the Workwear Cargo Pants ($39.50) with the gorgeous Pedro Pullover Sweater ($59).  I love the sweater because it also features a hood which comes in handy for those short walks to the car in the winter wind.  We were also sent two other super comfy and cute long sleeve tops for layering (Hector Rattler Tee - $30).  The shoes are from ShooShoos.

In my opinion, the Tea Collection clothing always tends to run true to size.  The clothes may look a bit big on Graham and Davis because I like to buy a size up (and Davis is as skinny as a rail).  The Carrot Fit Cords do fit a bit more snug in the legs than regular pants because of the cut.  They have a narrow ankle and calf.  That may be something to keep in mind.

Overall, we are always pleased with the finds that the Tea Collection brings and will continue to recommend them for special occasions or just for some comfortable fun!  I'm very excited to see what the Easter season brings!

This giveaway has ended.  Congratulations to TJ and Amy!

Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers

Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers

My hair is getting looong!  So long that I am forever on Pinterest trying to find new ideas on how to style it.  Of course, I mostly just throw it up into a sloppy bun while it is wet (such is the life of a mom... right?). I do love to curl my hair when I get a free moment, but those are few and far between.  So, when Conair contacted me about their Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers I was excited to give them a try.

When I curl my hair I primarily use a large barreled curling iron for natural waves.  The last time I used hot rollers I was in high school preparing for a cheerleading competition!  So, naturally, I was a little bit nervous about how well I would be able to use these.  I'm not going to lie.  I seriously burnt my pointer finger on the bar inside the first time I used it.  Let that serve as your warning!  I also had a terrible time putting them in the first time.  Like all hair products, this will take some practice.  The good news is that Conair provides instructional videos on their website.

What I do love about the Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers is the fact that they really are HOT (and very hot) in about 75 seconds.  This completely beats out my curling iron.  I also really appreciate that both the rolls and the clips are heated.  Just slide your clips over the bars while the unit heats and continue to rotate them through as you put in the rollers.  The rollers are great quality because they are created with ceramic (better for your hair and curls last longer).

The Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers set includes 20 heated clips, 20 rollers (8 jumbo, 6 large, 6 medium) and a 5 foot line of cord (great for those of us with full counter tops).  There is a power indicator light to let you know the rollers are doing their job.   You can purchase the Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers for about $41.99.  The website also lists a $5 rebate!  What a great gift idea for a girlfriend or sister.

This giveaway has ended.  Congrats to Nicole C!
